Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has announced that Ukraine is prepared to supply gas and oil to Slovakia, provided the resources are not of Russian origin.
The statement came during a briefing following a meeting with Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico near Uzhhorod, close to the border of their two nations, as reported by Ukrinform.
Zelensky highlighted the energy discussions with Fico, stating, “We are ready to supply gas and oil to Slovakia—but only if it’s not Russian gas or Russian oil. Because we are at war. That’s the bottom line.”
He pointed to Ukraine’s awareness of alternative projects and its willingness to collaborate, noting that prior to Russian strikes on its energy infrastructure, Ukraine maintained a surplus and could have deepened cooperation with Slovakia.
The president also addressed ongoing tensions, affirming that Ukraine is responding to Russian attacks on its energy system and will continue to do so. “But we want this war to end,” Zelensky added, reflecting a dual focus on defense and resolution.
The meeting, described as “productive” by Zelensky, also covered the recent “Coalition of the Willing” gathering in Paris on Thursday and a follow-up call with U.S. President Donald Trump, alongside talks on security guarantees and a potential ceasefire.
Fico offered Slovakia’s EU accession experience, while acknowledging the lengthy EU process and highlighted differing energy views, saying, “Bratislava and Kyiv have different views on energy,” and further emphasized mutual respect despite “diametrically opposed points of view” on the matter.
